What are UTM parameters?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags you add to the end of a URL. When someone clicks, these tags are sent to Google Analytics, allowing you to track exactly where that traffic came from (for example: if they came from a Facebook ad or the monthly email newsletter).

Common Use Cases

Google Ads Campaigns

Track paid search performance by tagging every ad click with source, medium, and campaign name. Compare which keywords and ads convert best.

Email Newsletters

Identify which newsletter edition drives the most traffic. Tag each link differently to compare open rates and click-through performance.

Social Media (Organic vs. Paid)

Distinguish organic from paid traffic on the same platform. Tag bio links, stories, and post links separately to measure true ROI.

Influencer & Affiliate Links

Give each partner a unique campaign tag to fairly attribute conversions and measure ROI per collaborator or influencer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

No. Google ignores UTM parameters for ranking purposes. However, use canonical tags to prevent duplicate content issues from multiple UTM variations of the same page.

What's the difference between utm_source and utm_medium?

Source identifies where the traffic comes from (google, newsletter, facebook). Medium describes how it arrives (cpc, email, organic, banner). Together they give a complete picture.

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

Yes in Google Analytics. 'Facebook' and 'facebook' appear as two separate sources. Always use lowercase for consistency across all your campaigns.

Can I use UTM parameters on internal links?

It's not recommended. UTM on internal links overwrites the original session source, making analytics data unreliable. Use event tracking for internal navigation instead.
